How Assumptions Hinder Spiritual Growth

How Assumptions Hinder Spiritual Growth

There are so many ways assumptions can hinder your spiritual growth. In essence, making assumptions is the lowest form of knowledge. When you make an assumption, you tell yourself that something is true without having evidence that it is. So, when we die to our emotions, we will be unbothered with offenses that tries to distract us from our destiny. And a dead man can’t talk.

In fact, we make decisions and view situations based on what may not be entirely true. And involving others can often provide misleading information. Consequently, assumptions hinder your spiritual growth because they become a bias foundation for all that you think you know.

For example, assumptions can affect your thoughts, feelings and decisions. A a result, one can put themselves in a position of judgement. And as human beings, we are not equipped to judge another person or situation, not even ourselves.

False Assumptions That Hinder Your Spiritual Growth

You can passionately believe something that is completely untrue. Untruths don’t always present themselves as being fake. If they did, we would all be the wiser. Obviously, if our false assumptions were dressed a big bear, growling loudly, we’d identify it faster. Therefore, we would turn from assumptions that really hurt us. Unfortunately, they don’t and we don’t.

Instead, we embrace them because we don’t know better. This means that you can cling to assumptions that hinder your spiritual growth and hurt you. Not only that, but you begin to fortify it with a slew of evidence from your life.

So you unintentionally stock pile examples to prove your false assumptions. And this continues until they seem to be a part of your outlook. In evidently, they become imbedded in your soul as if they are reality.

Some assumptions barely disturb your wholeness, thus having a minor affect on you. But other untruths are much more dangerous. It really matters if you assume a rotted wood walkway is secure. And you have understood, not seeing those wooden planks have rotted through.

Here are four untrue assumptions that can severely wreck your spirituality and relationship with God. Whether you believe them openly or in silence, they can still influence your outlook.

1. God doesn’t really hear my prayers assumptions hinder spiritual growth

It’s really easy to believe that your prayers are unheard. After all, how can God keep track of billions of people and I can barely remember my children’s names? But there’s a problem with believing that nobody is really listening. And that is, you may believe that prayers of real intent are not worth your time and effort. Ultimately, they become a chore. Something for you to hurry through and check off that it’s done.

We don’t have an absentee God. The invitation to pray always implies that God is always there, awaiting conversation. This invitation should not only be taken with joy, but also with enormous respect. Who are you that God would seek to talk with you? But he does. His divine attention is upon you when you pray.

2. If God loved me my, life would be a whole lot better

Two untruths at work here. The first is the most dangerous, which questions the very nature of God. The first great commandment of all eternity is to love God with all of our heart, might, mind, and strength. But the first great truth is that God loves us with all of His heart, might, mind and strength.

You misunderstand God if you think that he must prove His love to us by blessing us according to our script. He loves and bless us because it is impossible for him to do otherwise. For this reason, he has invested in us. And created the perfect customized circumstances for us to return into his presence.

3. I can have one foot in Babylon and one in the Kingdom of God

Babylon only continues to flourish because it has its appeal. It has charisma, heresy and flash. We think we’ll finding our place in the world, when instead, the world’s finding its place in us. However, you cannot have it both ways.

We can embrace the latest philosophies of men and court the cheers of the flattering crowd. But that just makes us a schmoozer of sorts. Trying to please and enjoy all, making our opinions change with the shifts of the climate.

If Zion is the pure in heart, there is no substitute accepted here. God seeks to help us become sanctified – not good, sort of.

4. If I perform perfectly, then I’m worthy of His love

Perfect performances are impossible for citizens of an imperfect world. To think otherwise is to torture ourselves. It is also to become overly self-concerned, tempted to constantly evaluate ourselves when we should be about loving other people.

God loves us where we are and invites us with open arms to ‘Come unto him’. Not come when you’re ready, when you feel entirely worthy, when you have achieved something outstanding. But come now. Christ’s love is a come as you are party.

Don’t allow assumptions to hinder your spiritual growth. Instead, follow God’s word and seek legitimate spiritual advisement.
